FINCA GUIVAL is a unique place dedicated to healing – both of the land and the people who visit. It is a showroom for sustainable living. Our aim is to demonstrate that it is possible to live sustainably, in harmony with nature. We hope that this will inspire you.
We are living our dream and invite you to be part of this project.
Finca Guival is hidden in the mountains of the Puntarenas region of Costa Rica, approximately 80 miles south of San José. Our desire is to live as close to nature as possible. Power is provided from our own solar panels and water is sourced from the nearby mountain river.
You will be fully immersed in Costa Rican culture by working directly with Spanish-speaking locals, enjoying traditional foods, and exploring the abundant nature of our region. You will stay at the farm for the duration of your stay with the option to take part in trips and other activities at weekends.
There are a wide variety of activities available to volunteers. You can take part in farm work in the fields and nursery, such as weeding and harvesting. There are also general maintenance, cooking and cleaning tasks. There are opportunities to create content for our website and social media, and also to teach english.
I had three nice weeks at the farm. I immediately felt at home when I arrived. Everyone is super friendly and welcome you with such nice vibes. The team organizes a lot of activities to make you discover the area and the culture, which is amazing! They will always be there to help you with anything you need/would like to do. I learned a lot about plants, typical food, improve my Spanish and was very happy to have the opportunity to paint a mural and learn how to cook tamales!

I had a great time volunteering at Finca Guival. I worked on the website, which was a good way to learn more about the inspiring vision for the farm. It was nice to start each day working on the terrace looking out towards the rainforest and mountains. As a vegetarian, I was looked after well, with three big cooked meals every day. In addition to the work, we had a fun time hanging out with the other volunteers and staff, playing games like Uno and taking walks in the area.

I loved volunteering at Finca Guival. I worked in the kitchen and was able to follow food from the 'field to the fork'. A lot of the fresh ingredients are grown on the Finca and incorporated into the meals we shared together.
The games of UNO in the evenings were fun too.

An incredible experience to connect with the essence of nature; a journey into an immense universe of learning and experiences. A magical farm where creativity is the limit and curiosity is the driving force. I highly recommend this experience for all those travelers who seek to build, create, imagine, plant, heal and grow. An experience that opens perspectives, allows you to pause, immerses you and invites you to participate in a more sustainable world and shelters you to find the answers to your questions.

Finca Guival won my heart! If you are looking for a quite location with strong roots in organic agriculture, outdoor activities and a chill, welcoming vibe— look no further.
During my stay there I was involved in the essential organic/permaculture farming experience from seeding, soiling, planting, harvesting and packaging. The work hours are short (7am-12pm) and they really put an effort in teaching you the philosophy, skills, and processes in farming the Costa Rican style. They have at least 30+ kinds of herbs, vegetables, fruits and are really “walking the talk” of sustainability. The farm is entirely run on solar energy; the wormery provides the nitrogen to fertilize the plants; the compost feeds the pig. I can’t believe how much I learned during my stay here about organic farming and environmental-friendly living in general. Jose made sure we volunteers understand the process and are having an amazing time work on the farm. You will leave this place having made a tangible impact.
The farm is situated in a secluded, quite place in the mountains but there are quite a lot to do around here. You could hike, swim in the river, or shop near the Panama border (1h drive away). Cocordova National Park is a bus ride away. And above all, the magic of Finca Guival is really in the people. Yuly, Fanny and Alex are legends themselves, and their energy lights up the whole place. They make sure you are seen, heard, and welcomed; they are funny and laid back; and they would go their way to help you with any concerns you might have or personal struggles you are facing. The other farm hands are also amazing and it’s this love for life that binds the family together.
I’m a 34 year old Chinese citizen living in the US. This is my 2nd time volunteering in Costa Rica, and I could say Finca Guival went beyond my expectation on all levels. I would highly recommend it if you want to connect with the land, work with your hands and enjoy some solitude.

You can use the Passer application to purchase your tickets or you can do it directly at the terminal.
We will be waiting for you in Piedras Blancas to go to the farm, about 10km from where the bus drops you off. (We recommend you remind the bus driver at Palmar Norte that you get off in Piedras Blancas.)

In exchange, you receive accommodation and three delicious vegetarian farm-to-table meals each day. (Please let us know of any allergies or dietary restrictions in advance.)
Living in the rainforest is a unique and enriching experience that invites you to embrace a simpler, more natural way of life. Our accommodation is basic and close to nature, offering an authentic connection to the environment. This may require some adjustments from modern comforts, but it also provides a special opportunity to connect with the natural world.
Expect cold showers that can be refreshing, and be prepared for the mountainous terrain, which requires physical fitness if you wish to hike in the area. At night, use your flashlight to explore and be mindful of where you step and place your hands. Naturally, there are insects here.
Sometimes, nature also challenges us with strong wind or rain.

To keep everyone safe and happy, we have a number of house guidelines to respect:
Cleanliness and Order
Maintain cleanliness and order in all living spaces, dining areas, and common areas (e.g., hammock areas, outdoor sofa, and outdoor round table). After each meal and before going to bed, make sure the dining table is clean and organised.
Dishwashing and Dining Areas
After each meal, collect and wash used dishes, glasses, pans and all cooking tools. Make sure the dishwashing area is clean and organized.
Personal Hygiene and Bathroom Etiquette
Maintain proper personal hygiene, including changing clothes and showering at least every other day. Don't forget to take out the trash when necessary. When using the restroom, make sure the floor is dry after cleaning and that hand washing and tooth brushing areas are free of hair and toothpaste residue.
Waste Disposal
Food scraps should be placed in the compost garbage can. Other waste should be sorted and properly recycled in designated containers.
Task Performance and Communication
Perform assigned tasks as directed by your supervisor. Be sure to maintain clear communication with a guardian/staff member before accessing the farm or working independently to ensure safety. Some tasks may need to be repeated to meet the required standard.
Respect and Kindness
Maintain respect, friendliness and empathy for others at all times. A positive attitude is essential.
Use of Games and Entertainment Items
Use items such as board games, cards, dominoes, and Jenga in a responsible manner. After use, be sure to store them in the designated area in good condition.
